Witch of Endor Greeting Cards

"In 1 Samuel we have the story of “the witch of Endor,” lit. she with power over the ‘ov’ at Endor. As ruling king, Saul has banished all practitioners of magic and those who speak to ghosts. And yet in his own time of need and fear this is exactly who he seeks out and finds in the witch of Endor. We can read from this contradiction both that Saul’s law has not successful in driving out alternative practice and that the ban was not about the act itself, never about limiting his own access but controlling others. The medium calls up the spirit of Samuel who prophesies to her that Saul will die the next day in battle. Saul’s death is later interpreted in Divrei Hayamim as punishment for seeking guidance outside of G-d, maybe in an effort to assimilate this story of witches and ghosts and powerful women into the dominant order. But I choose instead to read between the lines. True to the role of a medium, the witch of Endor acts as a conduit and mirror showing Saul his own destructiveness."
